How Area Rugs Are Made

Spread the love

Area rugs are made with the same old techniques used for decades. After the apparition of the machines, area rugs are made faster, but the techniques did not change. The price of your rug is fixed by the time of your rug’s work and the weaver’s talent. But don’t forget to take a look at appearance and texture when you searching for a rug.

To make your decision easily here are the basic rug types:

Hand-Knotted

The hand- knotting technique is based on singular knots tied one next to another, forming in this way  the proper base of the rug. These knots, depending on the number and density make a more valuable and durable rug. This method is the most difficult  trough rug-making techniques.

Tufted

Compared with hand-knotted rugs, the tufted one are created without any knots, and it can be hand-made( hand-held tools) or by machine. The technique is based on loops of yarn that are easily pulled through a rug`s backing material, making the procedure less complicated, fastest and inexpensively than the other ones. This type of rug, may shed more, requiring more frequent cleaning.

Hooked

Hooking is more like tufting, except the yarn loops will remain intact. In a hooked rug, loops of yarn are pulled through the rug’s backing material by machine or with a hand-held hooking needle. The difference is that the loops are singular, creating a round, embroidered look.

Flat-Woven

Compared with the above rugs, flat-weaves don`t have a pile. Instead, the rug’s vertical yarns (warps) are simply woven through the horizontal yarns (wefts). Some flat-woven rugs, can be hand-produced or with the help of the machines.

Braided

Just like flat-waved, the braided rugs don`t have a pile, being easily reversible. In this case, the yarns are braided into a singular rope. This rope is sewed together in a spiral fashion way, resulting a strong, durable piece that can resist in almost any environment.
