Spread the love

The travertine stone has become one of the most appreciated stones in home decorating, thanks to its similarity to limestone and to its density that makes it to be considered more like marble. Having a rustic yet elegant look, it proves out to be ideal for decorating your house in a traditional or neutral manner. For those of you who prefer earthy tones, travertine is the most elegant and appealing solution and it will not let you down.

In case you never decorated with any natural stone before, making a decision in where to use the travertine can be tricky. While most of the people prefer man-made stones because they are not aware of travertine’s adaptability and limitations, it is important for you to know the advantages and disadvantages of the place you find proper for installing the travertine.

Travertine Advantages and Uses

It is good to know that travertine is one of the most resistant man-made flooring options and increases the value of the proprierty. Also it has proven its utility by being used both inside(kitchens, bathrooms, living quarters, sink counters, tub surrounds, showers) and outside the house (decks, patios, driveways, pool surrounds). Given its similarity to marble there is no surprise that it can also be used in tabletops and end tables. At the end of it all, it is also ecofriendly as it does not need any acidic or abrasive cleaner in order to clean it.

Disadvantages of Using Travertine

Considering the fact that Travertine is a soft stone, there are some small disadvantages you should consider before purchasing.
You should consider the fact that is not recommended to use travertine in a room that is often used by people but especially by pets, if possible because this type of floor is exposed to scratching. Although it absorbs water and moisture and can be used in bathrooms, it is not recommende to be used outside if there are chances of freezing because of an unstable environment. In case of freezing, travertine may crack and break.
Also it is good to know that natural stones require a specific cleaner. For further questions in that area ask your installer but remember not to use any acidic or abrasive cleaners because they could permanently damage the stone.
Considering the fact that it is not mass prduced and it comes from natural stone quarries, travertine can be expensive. Although it may bring your home elegancy and charm, you can decide if this is the floor that suits your home best after knowing your decorating budget, where you want to install it and how often you use the area where you want to put it.
